Why this place matters

Mendeleev is a compound stratovolcano in southern Kunashir. The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program gives an elevation of 888 metres and describes a summit dome within nested calderas roughly 6–7 and 3–3.5 kilometres across.

The eco-trail on its lower slopes was laid out so visitors can see the volcano's active geothermal field on a marked path, without needing full mountaineering experience or a summit attempt.

Access and timing

The trailhead lies within reach of South Kurilsk, and the walk itself is considerably shorter and easier than a summit attempt on Mendeleev or Tyatya.

Even so, a full loop takes a few hours with time to look around, and cloud can settle over the geothermal field later in the day, so a morning start gives the clearest views.

Keep away from fumaroles and hot water outside the marked boardwalk.

Weather and visibility

Steam from the vents mixes with any low cloud rolling in from the coast, and on damp days the whole field can be wrapped in mist that hides the surrounding slopes.

Clear, dry weather gives the best visibility of the calderas and the steaming ground; rain also makes the boardwalk and access paths slippery.

Rules and safety

Stay on the marked boardwalk and posted paths at all times — the geothermal ground nearby is fragile and unstable, and can conceal scalding water beneath an innocuous-looking crust.

The smell of gas is a signal to move away, not to get a closer look; keep children and pets close on the geothermal sections.

A safe viewpoint from the boardwalk is always better than stepping onto the geothermal ground itself.
