Why this place matters

Golovnin Caldera is a large collapsed volcanic basin in southern Kunashir, formed when a major eruption emptied the magma chamber beneath an earlier volcano and the ground above subsided.

Two crater lakes fill its floor — Goryachee and Kipyashchee — and steam, heated water, gas vents and altered rock around them show that the hydrothermal system beneath the caldera is still active.
