Why this place matters

Mendeleev is a compound stratovolcano in southern Kunashir. The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program gives an elevation of 888 metres and describes a summit dome within nested calderas roughly 6–7 and 3–3.5 kilometres across.

Its lower slopes host one of the island's most active geothermal fields, with fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs reachable via a well-established eco-trail rather than a full summit expedition.
